It has always been illegal to make your license plates different from those allowed by the rules set out by the DVLA but the UK government has really started to crack down on the practice in the last year or two. It is now illegal for a bike plate manufacturer to supply a plate for use on the UK roads that does not meet these standards so if you are looking for a something customised you will have to find a dodgy supplier or buy a kit to make it yourself.
