DHT Hair Loss Explained

June 3, 2009

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hair loss is a condition that impacts men and women. Basically, it occurs when a certain enzyme in the scalp comes into contact with the hormone testosterone.

What happens, in layman’s terms, is the DHT causes the cells responsible for hair growth to malfunction, meaning the body stops trying to grow hair. This is why certain shampoos are good for counteracting DHT hair loss – they scrub away the Dihydrotestosterone so that the cells in the hair follicles can do their job properly.

The reason tablets, or any medication that alters the chemicals in our bodies, are ineffective for fighting baldness is because both testosterone, and the enzyme that when contacted causes Dihydrotestosterone, are essential in men for countering the effects of estrogen. This is why baldness affects men to a much greater degrees than women – the male body produces much more testosterone.

If you are noticing any signs DHT hair loss, the best solution is to see a doctor and he will likely prescribe you some special shampoo.
