Hair Implants For Women Are Not Effective

February 6, 2010

If you are a woman and you have been noticing hair thinning and maybe even a bald spot or two then I am sure you want a solution to your hair loss problems and you want it now.  Hair implants, or transplants as they are also called, can offer an enticing answer but there are a few things you should know before spending thousands of dollars on a procedure you may not be happy with.  Hair transplant procedures work well for men because of the nature of their hair loss and not so well for women.

When a man loses hair he will usually see the loss starting in two distinct areas.  The first is the front of the scalp and this problem is known as a receding hair line.  The second most common area of hair balding is the vertex or crown area of the scalp.  Men will generally not experience hair loss at the back of the head nor on the sides.  This fact is very important to successful hair transplant surgery because the thick hair growth at the back of the scalp can be used as a donation site for the hair follicles to be implanted into the bald spots.  The hair restoration surgeon will remove some of the growing hair follicles from this area and then transplant them into the thinning area for a thicker head of hair.  These implants can even be used to reconstruct the hair line which is the most noticeable part of the hair for men.

Women, on the other hand, will usually see thinning conditions over their entire scalp area.  This does not leave a good donor area as removing hairs form one spot to another just makes the first look that much more thin.  Hair implants women have not been used effectively because of this reason.  There is a new procedure called Follicular Unit Extraction, that can be used effectively to transplant body hairs, but it does not give good results on the hair line.
