Some Tips On How To Maintain Your Gutters and Downspouts

February 9, 2010

Properly maintained gutters and downspouts can last up to two or three times as long as ones that are poorly maintained.  Give your investment a proper life span and make sure to inspect your gutters and downspouts about twice a year.  This is an important step in rain gutter maintenance.  Don’t wait until they clog up, because by then it will be too late, damage may have been done already, and rain gutters clogging up usually happens at the worst possible time.  Like when it’s raining cats and dogs. Typically it is best to check your rain gutters and downspouts in the spring and again in the fall.  It might be easiest to set a date in your mind to check them, for example, March 1st and September 1st, or perhaps an important anniversary or date in your life.

Improper drainage due to improper pitch when rain gutters are installed is most likely the biggest problem for rain gutters.  Improper pitch doesn’t allow the rainwater to drain properly, causing it to pool and allowing debris to buildup in those areas.  This greatly increases the chances of your rain gutters rusting, no matter what the material they are made of.

In order to prolong the life of your rain gutters and downspouts that you spent so much money on, make sure to completely clean them out at least twice a year, in addition to checking on them twice a year.  If there are a large amount of trees near your house, you may need to clean out your gutters more often than this.  Excessive foliage in the area can increase the amount of debris that builds up in your rain gutters, increasing the risk of damage.  Checking on and cleaning out your rain gutters and downspouts often, while it doesn’t sound very appealing, can keep your gutters and downspouts in prime condition and looking great for a good, long time.
