There are two main types of hand pruners on the market, bypass and anvil pruners. Both of these pruner names describe the way the blades operate and they are each suitable for cutting different types of material.
The blades of bypass hand pruners are somewhat like scissors in that they cut by passing closely to one another. They are designed to be used to prune live stems and while doing so, causing as little damage to the living tissue that is left behind on the plant.
The bottom blade on an anvil hand pruner is blunt and the cutting action operates by holding the stem on the bottom blade while the cutting blade slices through the stem. Anvil hand pruners are designed to cut woody or dead stems because the cutting action would otherwise crush the tender green stems of live branches.
