Glass Table Tops: The Bad and Good

July 13, 2009

I work for Hugo’s Glass Factory.

That is, I used to work there before the big National Downsizing.  I worked for the “big cheese” himself and even had my own business card with my home number and my private cell phone number. I sold glass table tops for them on my own time.

Adding my cell phone number was a big mistake but whoever suspected that I’d be a victim of the National Downsizing. Speaking of that, Mr. “Cheese” called me at home, and woke me up at six a.m. to deliver this blow. He didn’t even have the courtesy to wait until I got to the factory to tell me.

So that first morning I went to the café and talked with some of the other recently downsized people. Of course, none of them had done important work like mine.

Right away I began getting calls on my cell phone. It wasn’t until I was lying in bed that night that I remembered the message I had for incoming calls, “Please don’t leave a message.”

Next morning I Dinner at Cathy's: Broccollichanged the message to say, “We’re sorry to tell you. Hugo’s has shut down and can accept no more orders.”

Now, this is long story that ultimately led to a good ending. It actually launched my career in building and selling custom glass table tops in my own shop, something that has been very good to me over the past several years and allowed me to support my family. I was initially amazed by how many people loved the glass tops for tables that I created, but now I know that I had always had an artist inside of me just waiting to come out.

So, are you in the market for a glass top table? Let me give you some thing to consider before you take the plunge and buy one from me or anybody else.

Glass can be be very stylish and elegant either as a top to a wood or metal table or as a stand alone top for a table. By this I mean it adds shine and polish. But, you also need to remember that glass is glass and glass chips and scratches no matter how good the glass used or the maker if not protected and treated properly.  If the point of getting a glass table top is to protect the wood on an antique piece of furniture, then no matter. However, if the glass table top is the point, you just want to keep this in mind and make sure that you don’t place in in a location where it will be often bumped of where children play.

And that leads to the next thing you should consider when looking at glass tops. If they break because they slip off of a piece of furniture or the furniture is tipped over, most glass table tops will shatter into a very ugly and dangerous mess. Many people go to the hospital every year, some with quite serious injuries, as the result of glass top table that have broken. This is not something you want to happen in your home. Make sure that any glass top furniture to get will be in a place that is safe from getting knocked over and do not store lots of items on top of a glass top which could actually break the glass of destabilize the table.

Glass tops are my life now and I love every masterpiece of glass table I make. But, they are not for everyone or for every home and you should consider the purpose and place in your house for an glass table tops you decide to acquire.
