What Is Snake Protection?

November 13, 2009

The idea of snake protection is nothing new.  In cultures that have been threatened by extremely venomous snakes, the idea of going out of your way to protect yourself is not far fetched.  Over 10,000 people a year still die from snake bites in India, while Africa sees well over 30,000 deaths a year.  These are extreme examples, as in the United States only about 8 people a year die from snake bites.

This is due to a combination of things.  Excellent and readily available health care for one, as well as far less venomous snakes.  Cottonmouths or a giant Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake can be very bad news, but they’re nowhere near a black mamba or cobra.  Still, another reason that many people avoid hospital stays is because people in high risk areas go in with snake protection.

There is more than one form of snake protection.  There are snake proof chaps, snake proof boots, and snake gaiters.  All of these are designed to cover the legs – the part of the body that is by far and away the most likely to suffer from a snake bite.  Wearing one, or a combination, can help individuals who live, work, camp, or hunt in infested areas to avoid the dangers that are easily associated with venomous snakes in an area.

While only one type of clothing might be necessary, many individuals use a combination for maximum protection.  Thinking ahead for a worst case scenario, smart outdoors men will also be carrying around an anti-venom kit that matches the most common venomous snakes in the area.
